Industry Trends

The European banking sector is experiencing unprecedented regulatory complexity following Basel III implementation and ongoing ESG reporting requirements, creating high demand for specialists who can navigate Dutch National Bank (DNB) and European Banking Authority (EBA) frameworks. Banks are particularly focused on COREP and FINREP accuracy as regulatory scrutiny intensifies and penalties for non-compliance have increased significantly. Financial institutions are investing heavily in regulatory technology (RegTech) solutions and automation tools like Adenza and Wolters Kluwer to manage reporting complexity, creating opportunities for professionals who can bridge the gap between regulatory requirements and technology implementation. The wholesale banking segment in Amsterdam is expanding due to Brexit-related relocations and the Netherlands' position as a European financial hub, driving increased demand for regulatory reporting expertise as new entities establish operations and existing banks scale their compliance infrastructure.

Role Significance

Typically works within a regulatory reporting team of 3-8 professionals, collaborating closely with finance, risk, and IT teams while potentially mentoring junior reporting specialists
Senior individual contributor role with significant autonomy and stakeholder interaction, positioned as a subject matter expert who directly influences the bank's regulatory compliance strategy and operational risk profile

Key Projects

Implementation of new regulatory reporting requirements such as updated COREP frameworks or emerging ESG disclosure obligations Data quality enhancement initiatives to improve accuracy and reduce regulatory submission errors Process automation projects working with IT teams to streamline reporting workflows and reduce manual intervention Regulatory change impact assessments and implementation of revised reporting standards from DNB or EBA

Success Factors

Deep technical expertise in European regulatory frameworks combined with practical understanding of how wholesale banking products translate into regulatory reporting requirements, enabling accurate interpretation and implementation of complex regulatory guidelines Strong stakeholder management and communication skills to effectively challenge business units on data quality issues while maintaining collaborative relationships essential for accurate and timely reporting delivery Adaptability and change management capabilities to navigate the fast-paced regulatory environment and help the organization respond quickly to new requirements while maintaining operational excellence

Market Demand

Very high demand driven by regulatory complexity, Brexit-related banking expansion in Amsterdam, and shortage of professionals with combined Dutch/EU regulatory knowledge and wholesale banking product expertise

Important Skills

Critical Skills

COREP and FINREP expertise is absolutely essential as these represent the core regulatory reports that determine the bank's capital adequacy and financial health, with errors potentially resulting in regulatory action, capital restrictions, or reputational damage that could threaten the institution's operational viability Knowledge of wholesale banking products including money market instruments, securities, and derivatives is critical because accurate regulatory reporting requires deep understanding of how these complex financial instruments translate into regulatory capital calculations and risk metrics Experience with regulatory reporting tools like Adenza and Wolters Kluwer platforms is vital as these systems form the technical backbone of modern regulatory reporting operations, and proficiency directly impacts efficiency, accuracy, and the ability to implement process improvements

Beneficial Skills

Data analytics and visualization skills using tools like Python, R, or advanced Excel capabilities would be highly valuable for conducting the deep-dive analyses mentioned in the role and identifying patterns in reporting errors or inefficiencies Project management certification or experience would enhance effectiveness in leading change management initiatives and coordinating with multiple stakeholders across finance, IT, and business units during regulatory implementations Knowledge of emerging regulatory trends such as ESG reporting, digital asset regulations, or operational resilience requirements would position the candidate as a forward-thinking regulatory professional capable of anticipating future compliance needs

Unique Aspects

This interim role offers immediate exposure to a growing wholesale bank environment with startup-like agility, providing opportunities to shape regulatory processes from the ground up rather than working within established legacy systems and procedures
The position combines hands-on regulatory reporting execution with strategic process improvement responsibilities, offering a unique blend of technical expertise development and change management experience that is highly valuable in the current market
Working in Amsterdam's expanding wholesale banking sector provides exposure to diverse international banking products and regulatory frameworks, creating valuable cross-border expertise as the city continues to attract Brexit-related banking relocations

Career Growth

Progression to management roles typically occurs within 2-3 years for high performers, while specialized expert tracks in regulatory capital or risk management may develop over 3-5 years depending on additional qualifications and market conditions
