Industry Trends

Enterprise data governance and Master Data Management are experiencing unprecedented growth as organizations prioritize data-driven decision making and digital transformation initiatives. Companies are investing heavily in MDM programs to create single sources of truth for critical business data, driven by regulatory compliance requirements and the need for accurate analytics. The pet food industry specifically is undergoing significant digitization as consumer preferences shift toward premium products and direct-to-consumer channels, requiring sophisticated data management capabilities. Hybrid work models are becoming standard in data management roles, particularly in Canadian markets where companies are balancing talent retention with operational efficiency. Organizations are recognizing that data professionals can effectively manage enterprise programs remotely while maintaining critical in-person collaboration for stakeholder alignment and change management activities. The Canadian data management job market is experiencing strong demand, particularly in Alberta where energy and consumer goods companies are modernizing their data infrastructure. Competition for experienced MDM professionals is intensifying as organizations realize the strategic importance of data quality and governance in achieving business objectives.

Role Significance

Likely managing a matrix team of 5-8 data stewards, analysts, and technical resources across regional offices, with coordination responsibilities for 15-20 business stakeholders. The role appears designed to scale as the MDM program expands, with potential for direct reports as the organization grows.

The position carries substantial organizational influence through MDM steering committee facilitation and cross-functional stakeholder management, indicating high trust and strategic importance within Champion Petfoods' operational framework.

Key Projects

Enterprise MDM platform implementation and optimization projects spanning 12-18 month cycles Data migration and integration initiatives supporting business expansion and system consolidations Data quality improvement programs targeting specific business domains like customer, product, and vendor master data Regulatory compliance projects ensuring data governance meets industry standards and audit requirements

The ability to influence without direct authority while maintaining productive relationships with executives and operational staff is critical. Strategic thinking and program management expertise to design and execute comprehensive MDM roadmaps that align with business objectives while managing competing priorities and resource constraints. Success depends on creating sustainable processes and governance structures that scale with organizational growth.

Market Demand

High demand driven by accelerating digital transformation initiatives across Canadian enterprises and specific growth in consumer goods data management roles. The combination of MDM expertise and program management skills creates strong market positioning with limited candidate supply.

Change management and stakeholder engagement capabilities are mission-critical for driving organization-wide adoption of new data governance processes and overcoming resistance to standardized data practices. Success depends entirely on the ability to influence diverse stakeholders and create sustainable behavioral changes across the organization. Data governance and quality management skills provide the foundation for establishing sustainable MDM operations that deliver consistent business value. These competencies directly impact the program's long-term success and the organization's ability to leverage data assets for strategic advantage.
