Industry Trends

The aged care sector is experiencing unprecedented transformation driven by Australia's rapidly aging population, with home care services becoming the preferred model over institutional care. This shift is creating substantial demand for specialized research roles that can bridge clinical practice with evidence-based interventions, particularly in mental health applications for elderly populations. Mental health research in aged care is gaining significant momentum following increased government funding through initiatives like the Medical Research Future Fund, reflecting national recognition of depression and psychological wellbeing as critical health priorities for aging Australians. Clinical trial management roles are becoming increasingly sophisticated, requiring professionals who can navigate complex regulatory environments while maintaining high participant engagement standards, particularly in vulnerable populations such as home-bound elderly individuals.

Salary Evaluation

The AUD $97,417 base salary plus substantial salary packaging benefits positions this role competitively within the mid-tier research officer market in Perth. Including the tax-free packaging component, the effective compensation package reaches approximately AUD $115,967, representing strong value for a 12-month contract position in Western Australia's research sector.

Role Significance

The role involves direct management of research assistant teams, suggesting oversight of 3-8 staff members typical for clinical trial operations of this scale, while reporting to senior academic leadership and collaborating with multidisciplinary clinical teams.
This mid-level position carries significant operational responsibility, serving as the primary liaison between multiple stakeholder groups while managing both human resources and complex trial protocols. The role demonstrates substantial autonomy in decision-making regarding participant care and trial operations, indicating a position of considerable trust and professional standing.

Key Projects

Large-scale clinical trials focused on psychological interventions for vulnerable populations Multi-site research collaborations involving academic institutions and healthcare providers Regulatory compliance projects requiring ethics committee engagement and reporting Data management initiatives across complex healthcare information systems

Success Factors

Deep understanding of aged care dynamics and the unique challenges faced by elderly individuals receiving home-based services, enabling effective participant engagement and retention strategies Exceptional stakeholder management capabilities to coordinate effectively between research teams, clinical staff, participants, and their families while maintaining professional boundaries and trial integrity Strong regulatory and compliance expertise to navigate the complex ethical landscape of research involving vulnerable populations, ensuring both participant safety and scientific rigor Advanced project management skills with demonstrated ability to adapt quickly to changing circumstances while maintaining multiple parallel workstreams and deadlines Cultural competency and sensitivity when working with diverse elderly populations and their care networks, recognizing the complexity of home-based healthcare delivery

Market Demand

High demand exists for clinical research professionals with aged care experience, driven by increasing government investment in aging-related health research and the critical shortage of qualified personnel who can effectively work with elderly populations in home care settings.

Important Skills

Critical Skills

Clinical trial protocol adherence and regulatory compliance expertise is absolutely essential given the vulnerable population involved and the high-stakes nature of government-funded research, where any protocol deviations could jeopardize both participant safety and project continuation Project management and team leadership capabilities are crucial for success, as the role requires coordination of multiple research assistants while maintaining strict timelines and quality standards across complex data collection processes Stakeholder engagement and communication skills are vital for managing relationships with elderly participants, their families, healthcare providers, and academic partners, requiring exceptional interpersonal sensitivity and professional judgment

Beneficial Skills

Advanced data analysis capabilities using statistical software beyond basic REDCap familiarity would provide significant value in contributing to research outcomes and publication opportunities Prior experience in mental health or psychological intervention research would enhance understanding of depression assessment tools and therapeutic engagement strategies Knowledge of aged care sector regulations and funding models would facilitate better integration with existing care teams and understanding of participant care contexts

Unique Aspects

Partnership with leading academic institutions and Professor Tanya Davison's research leadership provides exposure to cutting-edge psychological intervention research with potential for significant clinical impact
Direct involvement in Medical Research Future Fund-supported research offers prestigious project experience with national significance and substantial career development potential
Hybrid work model combined with 12-month contract structure with extension possibilities provides both flexibility and job security in the competitive research employment market
Opportunity to work directly with vulnerable elderly populations in their home environments, providing unique insights into real-world healthcare delivery challenges and solutions

Career Growth

Career progression typically occurs within 2-3 years for high-performing individuals, with opportunities for advancement accelerated by the growing demand for aged care research expertise and the specialized nature of home-based clinical trial management.

Potential Next Roles

Senior Research Coordinator positions managing multiple concurrent trials Clinical Trial Manager roles with budget and strategic oversight responsibilities Research Program Manager positions in aged care or mental health organizations Academic research positions pursuing further postgraduate qualifications
